Reggae’s center of gravity is Jamaica, and especially Kingston: record shops, yards, studios, dancehalls, churches, schools and sound systems sat close enough for ideas to collide quickly. Imported rhythm and blues met Jamaican folk and religious traditions; ska moved into rocksteady and reggae; versions, dub, deejaying and dancehall kept changing how records were made and used. Kingston matters without swallowing the whole island. Musicians, singers, spiritual traditions and audiences moved into the capital from rural parishes and carried local knowledge with them, while scenes outside Kingston remained active in their own right.
